Stone cutting

I'm thinking about the cutting of stones and why everyone finds rocks from our earth only interesting if they are cut in certain ways. Think about it. How precious is a blue stone? Not super precious. We might look at it for a while and then stick it in a box and find it in a few months or years. BUT if its cut in a specific way, it becomes way interesting. So much more valuable that we need to set it and have it close to our bodies so we can look at it more frequently. Makes me wonder if i can make "stones" from other materials but still in the shape (or cut) would it still be precious?
