Pizza Man Milwaukee

Pizza Man Milwaukee
Originally uploaded by sarah.holden
A local Milwaukee landmark burned to the ground on Tuesday morning. Its only 1 block away from the studio and only 2 blocks away from where I live. Right in the middle of it all on Oakland and North. One of our Advanced Metals Students even works there, but its all gone now. Pizza Man the restaurant, the 10 apartments upstairs and the two (or maybe three?) restaurants that were next to it are burnt to the ground and they are demo-ing it all right now. This is the first time I've seen it since this happened on Tuesday, and I have to say it looks pretty horrible. The whole street is blocked off, and people are just standing around, staring and taking pictures, including myself. Crazy. You can check out more images on my flickr site here.

Jim Skull

To mourn the passing of my camera into the depths of wherever it might be...a beautifully and honestly crafted skull by French artist Jim Skull.

Dean Jenson Gallery

Went out tonight for Milwaukee's Gallery Night and saw some great art! My favorite work was none other than the beautiful illustrations of Kevin Giese, who I just happen to share a woodshop with. It was at the Dean Jenson Gallery, who just so happens to have a beautiful catalog of the unusual assortment of national artists who participated here. This older work of Kevin's is so different from most other work I have seen of his, I really love the line quality and the disjointed visceral quality of it.

"Queen"

"The Shaman"

"Untitled"

I am also loving this piece by Drew Malcolm, who I found out did go to school here in Madison for a while but is currently living it up in Brooklyn. this piece feels very brooklyn. Its nice to see some Brooklyn love. and YUM PB&J!

E V Day

This post begins with sadness..I can't find my camera!! Urg..I can't tell you how much this bugs me. Not so much that the camera is gone, but that it had so many vital pictures on it. All my end of semester student work is on that dang camera, I didn't have time to upload it before I left for holidays and now I have potentially lost it all. Dang. Dang. Dang.

So, for a while at least I will be posting pics I find elsewhere online. Like these amazing images of installation and sculpture artist, E. V. Day. Day's work addresses themes of feminism and sexuality through the lens of popular culture. Her signature explosion technique presents objects in a dissected form strung up with monofiliment, so we look at them differently. There is a very specimen like quality to the pieces she presents.

"Tongue Tied"

"Saarinen's Mother 2"

Some of her older work here presents edible crotchless panties or tongues stretched out and presented for our inspection. She moved into fabric dissection and pushed further her skill of presentation with the mono-filiment.

"Black Blue"

"Spidey Striptease"

"Bombshell"

Her most recent installation at the New York City Opera to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center presents 13 garments from the theatre's archive. Day gives new life to these garments that have been stored away for some time. Her careful selection and presentation of the garments give the entryway a very explosive welcome to the patrons of the new theatre.

Each piece of each garment is considered so carefully. I would LOVE to go and catch a glimpse of these beauties..

Standard Time

I can't stop thinking about this amazing performance by dutch artist, Mark Formanek.

The 24 hour performance consists of 70 workers who move planks 1611 times in a 4 x 12 meter space. Watch a 3 minute segment here.

I love the extraordinary length that these workers go through to achieve such a simple task, telling the time. The amount of time and labour that the workers put into the simple task of telling time makes us watch with wonder. Makes me stop and and appreciate that thing, time itself, that seems so fleeting! I can hardly believe its the end of the first week of January. I have a huge to-do list, and so so little time to finish everything...urgh! I really thought I'd have some time to stretch my wings and make tons of stuff, but I'm scrambling. Its nice to visualize time and just appreciate it for a few minutes..
