Untitled#1 (Heavy Heart)

This weekend went just wonderfully. Mira was able to come in and wear the heavy stylized heart that I made. When I first came to Milwaukee, I left behind everything I was comfortable with for the amazing opportunity to push myself further in my field. After living with my boyfriend (now fiance) for 5 years, I was quite uncomfortable with the feelings of longing I had when I moved here and he moved to Evanston, IL to start his master's program. In making the piece over the last month, I have learned how to deal with my feelings better, and keep myself busy so I don't have too much time to think about it, but it was so nice to see the piece come together. Even if I have learned to deal with my feelings better and may not feel as sad as I was once about the distance between us, I feel like this is something that many people can relate to, and therefore the piece is successful.

I also was able to bring together another piece that really was a last minute production but was fun. I was hoping to have enough latex tubing to make the ball of tubes REALLY large, but I just couldn't afford it. I had no idea that latex tubing was so expensive. Well, I constructed this ball of tubes, veins, feelings, emotions, and it is 150 feet of tubing, but if I was able to get 900 feet of tubing for the same price, that may have been better for what I was going for. Christof was able to wear the piece for me so I could document it and I feel like it was successful.

AMAZING!! I absolutely loved it. My very first Iron Pour and I was great. I met a great community of people, the iron pouring was scary and exciting at the same time and the work was successful. Arline Fisch at the Racine Art Museum

What an amazing week it has been! Yesterday I traveled to Racine, Wisconsin to hear a talk by Arline Fisch about her new installation at the Racine Art Museum. Arline has had such an amazing life of experiences and started working with metal in the early 1960s. She retired as an educator from San Diego State in 2000 and has exhibited extensively all over the world. She is an amazing lady too, she was very easy to talk to and super nice. I told her I was so excited to see that after all this time she is still working and showing and re-creating herself.

The show is full of her work from her early work until this series being her most recent. This series is the largest she has ever worked with her woven wire and the first time she has worked in the format of installation art. Finally seeing the work up close made me realize that it isn't all silver wire as I thought before. She actually prefers working with annodized aluminum because she loved the colors that she can achieve. I also really liked the neckpiece she was wearing, a true result of the processes she has been experimenting with over the years. What a great view from the street, all the work is installed in the windows and looks like the jelly fishes are just swimming by. Arline said that at night they have a light aqua color covering the lights, as well as fans going so it really looks like the pieces are swimming by. I must go back at night to see them, they were so active during the day, I can only imagine at night how they looked. Plus I think the images will be much better at night time when the reflections aren't as strong.

Act/React Show

On Friday I went to an artist Panel Discussion about the new show that opened on Saturday at the Milwaukee Art Museum. "Act/React" is a show compiled of work created by Liz Phillips, Brian Knep, Camille Utterback, Daniel Rozin, Scott Snibbe and Janet Cardiff (who I will be soon be related to once Dave and I get married, pretty cool, eh?) all of which were present at the panel discussion except for Janet Cardiff. The discussion was interesting. They talked about why they consider their work "interactive," considering all artwork, and just about everything is interactive, yet their work actually changes because of human interaction. A lot of the work is also dependent on technology. I thought it was great to go there and hear them speak because my work is also interactive, in the was that is it worn, and activated by the body, but it does not change necessarily--it is actually activated by interaction and it exists in that activation with the human body. One of the coolest pieces I heard them speak of was the work of Danny Rozin, who has work in the Act/React show that is different than this piece, but I just had to show it because I think it is amazing. It is a series of wooden pegs that rotate in reflection of whatever image is in front of them.

I haven't actually seen the entire show yet, but I am hoping to go later today to see it all. I also have a studio visit on Monday with Camille Utterback, which is great because at the lecture she was talking about how when she started, she would convince her friends in college to wear things and perform for her, so I'm excited to hear what she thinks about what I am working on.
